AMAZONITE AND ITS JEWELRY
Jewelry
designs that feature amazonite beads have a very graceful look. The vibrant green color
that is associated with the gemstone simply looks great when contrasted
with one's skin. Small, intricate white streaks that are commonly found on
it add
to the allure of the gemstone as they make it more subtle and
elegant. However, green is not the only color that the stone comes
in as it is also found in other colors such as yellow and blue.
On
average, consumers are not that familiar with amazonite. It is not
commonly found in nature. Hence, the low supply of jewelry designs
that feature it. The American state of Colorado,
and the Ural Mountains in Russia are currently the only two major amazonite
mining areas in the world.
Moreover, the vivacious green color that makes it so beautiful
also ironically contributes to consumers' unawareness of the
gemstone; its color is the primary reason why a lot of people commonly confuse
amazonite with jade. In fact,
one of the alternate names for amazonite is Amazon jade.
Even the European explorers that originally named the gemstone after the Amazon
river mistook amazonite for another mineral of similar green color that did come
from that part of the world. However, in the end, one can say that
their choice of name for the stone proved to be highly appropriate as green
color is by far the most pervasive and representative color of the Amazon basin.
Caring for amazonite jewelry:
Orthoclase,
a close relative of amazonite and another member of the feldspar family of minerals, has a rating of 6
on Mohs hardness scale. This
rating indicates that amazonite is a fairly tough mineral. However, it is
still susceptible to scratches.
One needs to exercise caution
when wearing a jewelry piece that contains amazonite. It's possible
to cause permanent damage to it by throwing or dropping
it. Please read our guide to jewelry
care or other relevant literature to learn more on how to
care for jewelry.
