HEMATITE AND ITS JEWELRY
Hematite beads are frequently used in our jewelry
designs even though we typically limit their role to being filler beads.
They especially come in very handy with beaded jewelry designs that
have other beads of darker color (e.g. onyx, obsidian).
Hematite itself comes in a number of colors: black, gray, brown and
red. When the mineral does come in red color, the color is typically
very intense and blood-like. In fact, this unique red
color is the main reason why the mineral is called as it is. The
word hematite comes from the ancient Greek word for blood, proving
that even
ancient Greeks used to describe Hematite's color as being
blood-like.
Hematite is commonly found in nature. It's the one
of the most commonly encountered minerals. It's used widely in the
iron production as it is the main ore of iron. Hematite is also
used in the production of magnetic media products (e.g. audio tapes,
video cassettes, floppy discs, etc.) as it exhibits magnetic
properties when exposed to heat.
Caring for hematite jewelry:
Hematite has a rating of between 5 and 6
on Mohs hardness scale. This
rating indicates that hematite is a fairly tough mineral. However, it is
still susceptible to scratches.
One needs to exercise caution
when wearing a jewelry piece that contains hematite. It's possible
to cause permanent damage to it by throwing or dropping
it. Please read our guide to jewelry
care or other relevant literature to learn more on how to
care for jewelry.
