PERIDOT AND ITS JEWELRY

Peridot is simply stunning with its bright, olive-accented green color. Its beauty has been admired since ancient times. Ancient Egyptians, Jews, Greeks and Romans widely used peridot for decorative purposes. The stone is mentioned in the Bible as one of the stones that were embedded in the famous Breastplace of Aaron. Cleopatra was a loyal admirer of it and many centuries later, peridot is still extremely popular with jewelry designers and gemstone collectors.

Peridot is a birthstone for the month of August, supposedly bringing luck and friendship to the person who wears a jewelry design that features it.

The gemstone comes exclusively in green color. Its color can be attributed to presence of iron in its structure. Specimens that are considered to be of best quality have less than fifteen percent of iron in their structures. Peridot’s gorgeous green color is the chief reason for people’s tendency to confused it with other gemstones of green color such as emerald and green garnets. In fact, peridot is still commonly referred to as the Evening Emerald.

Peridot can be found in many different places in the world. The American state of Arizona is a source for almost all of world’s supply. However, the finest specimens usually come from Egypt and Pakistan, with latter becoming increasingly important as one of the few areas where very large flawless specimens of the stone can be found.

Caring for peridot jewelry:

Peridot is a fairly sturdy mineral. It has a rating of around 7 on Mohs' Hardness Scale. This rating indicates that peridot is fairly resistant to scratches.

One still needs to exercise caution when wearing a jewelry piece that contains peridot beads. It's still not too hard to cause permanent damage to it by throwing or dropping it. Please read our guide to jewelry care or other relevant literature to learn more on how to care for jewelry.
