SODALITE AND ITS JEWELRY
Sodalite
is a rare mineral whose beads we simply love to use in our beaded jewelry
designs. Most people have seen it only in blue color even though it
may come in other colors as well (e.g. green and yellow). Small,
intricate white streaks that are commonly found on it add to the
allure of the gemstone as they make it more subtle and elegant.
Combination of white streaks and vivid blue color allows the jewelry
designer to mix sodalite beads with other materials of white color
(such as pearls), and create spectacular looking designs. Our Blues
beaded necklace is an example of such combination. It simply looks
great! The group of minerals that
sodalite belongs to is actually named
after it. Besides sodalite, other members of the sodalite group of minerals
also include
hauyne, lazurite, and nosean. The word sodalite is derived from
sodium, which is the main component of all of the minerals in the group.
Depending on the mineral, aluminum and calcium are the other
important chemical elements making up the structure of minerals
belonging to the sodalite group. The
mineral was unknown to mankind until very recently. It was
discovered in early 19th century in Greenland and since then, it has
been found in major quantities only in few places in the world. It
is typically found in areas that had major volcanic
activity.
Mount Vesuvius,
a volcano outside the Italian city of Naples, is one such
location. In fact, sodalite that is found there is widely regarded as being
perhaps of the finest quality in the world.
Caring for sodalite jewelry:
Sodalite has a rating of around 6 on Mohs hardness scale. This
rating indicates that sodalite is a fairly tough mineral. However, it is
still susceptible to scratches.
One needs to exercise caution
when wearing a jewelry piece that contains sodalite. It's possible
to cause permanent damage to it by throwing or dropping
it. Please read our guide to jewelry
care or other relevant literature to learn more on how to
care for jewelry.
